Following on from the world map jigsaw puzzles, and inspired by resin tables, I went on to design and create my own accurate 3D representations of some of the well known Fells in the Lake District.
These were made by tracing the contour lines of maps on Adobe Illustrator and following the various roads, bridleways and footpaths that traverse the contours of these fells. The layers were then grouped into every few layers to be laser engrave and cut. This meant that not only could I save money and material usage; but the final product was a lot lighter because it was almost hollow inside.
Because of its nature, I needed to make the Blencathra model using additional layers with supports in the corners, this was done every 10 layers. Blue wood dye was used on the lower layers of Catbells which submerged into Derwent Water.
